BTEC Performing Arts – Music – FAQ

What are the aims of the courses?

To give students an understanding of the world of Performing Arts. To allow students to develop their social and communication skills. To allow students an outlet to explore their creative ideas. 

What assessments will I have to complete?

Students will complete one learning checkpoints and one common assessment in each Performing Arts subject every half term. Written feedback will be provided after each assessment and students will also receive a ‘working at’ grade after each common assessment.

What is involved with the examination?

In BTEC courses (Dance and Music) assessment is ongoing across the 2 year course. In both courses students will be required to sit a written exam at the end to complete their final unit. For GCSE courses (Drama) formal assessment takes place at the end of Year 11 in the form of a written exam. All other assessments are practical either internally assessed, or assessed by a visiting examiner.

What independent study will I have to undertake?

For GCSE courses students will be set homework each week in the form of a log book in order to keep themselves informed on their progress across the unit. For BTEC courses, students will be expected to complete their own research on a range of topics which will be set each unit. This research will make up a large percentage of their final grade for the unit. 

What career opportunities could this course help to give me?

Students who do Performing Arts are often interested in going into the profession. However, any profession will value an employee who has the confidence to work with a range of different people from different backgrounds. Performing Arts students, regardless of their end profession, will have the confidence to present in front of an audience and express their ideas confidently. They will also have a developed creative awareness which can be of value in many jobs.
