Business Studies – FAQ

What courses can I take at GCSE?

Students can choose between the BTEC Business First Award or the OCR Business Studies

What is the difference between the two courses?

The BTEC course has 2 units of Coursework and 1 examined Unit whereas the OCR courses has 2 external examinations at the end of Year 11. So it depends of what you feel more confident with.

What independent study will I have to undertake?

Both courses require you to understand real businesses and analyse the impact of decisions on a business. It is important that you are prepared to work both alone and in a group in order to work set. You will also benefit from good communication skills we like to use a lot of group work in our department.

What career opportunities could the course help to give me?

It is possible to gain entry into a wide variety of careers and further education after taking Business at GCSE and A Level.  You may go on to an apprenticeship or take a university place.

What course can I take at A Level?

Students can choose between the AQA Business Studies A Level or the BTEC Business course

What is the difference between the two courses?

The BTEC course has 2 units of Coursework and 1 examined Unit whereas the AQA course has 2 external examinations at the end of Year 12 and 3 at the end of Year 3. You will also require at least a B grade at GCSE to take the A Level Business qualification.

What opportunities are there for in the department?

In Year 9 we take part in the Coke Cola Challenge where students have the opportunity to complete in a regional and then national final if successful.

At KS5 you can take part in the Young Enterprise challenge which we strongly recommend to our Business A Level students in Year 12. We take a team from Year 12 and 13 to the prestigious BASE Competition at the University of Warwick and a Year 12 team is taken to the CIPFA Sixth Form Games at the University of Birmingham. We also take our KS5 students in Business to Star City for a revision workshop run by tutor2u and students compete in the Student Investor Challenge and FSE Challenge in both Year 12 and 13.

We are always looking for ways to enrich and enhance our students so watch this space for more news on opportunities coming your way in the department!
